“Playing that was extraordinarily incisive and gripping”— Baltimore Sun

American cellist Lynn Harrell takes on the role of one of literature’s most popular personages, as he brings to life the fanciful, often comic, Don Quixote in Strauss’ “Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character”, a landmark composition for cello and orchestra. Scored for an orchestra in which wind instruments dominate, there was a danger upon its first appearance that Brahms’ Serenade No. 2 would be regarded as being dangerously avant-garde. It has however grown to become one of his most beloved orchestral works.
