Description:
Immortalising Singapore's history in an icon is the Merlion, the national symbol of Singapore. It pays homage to Singapore's past names, Temasek and Singapura. Temasek, or Sea Town was one of the first names of Singapore, when it was merely an obscure fishing village. This symbol, created by Fraser Brunner as the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board, became the Board's trademark symbol since 20 July 1966. 6 years later, on 15 September 1972, Lee Kuan Yew (then Prime Minister) officiated the installation of the Merlion statue at the mouth of the Singapore River. It stands at a height of 8.6 metres and weighs 40 tonnes, with its body made of cement, skin from porcelain plates and eyes from small red teacups. View Fullscreen Map
