Vesak Day

Vesak Day is an annual holiday celebrated by Buddhists to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

Devotees gather at temples across the island to offer prayers and practise the 'three steps, one bow' rite in repentance and in reverence of Buddha. Many of them also take part in acts of generosity such as giving alms to the poor.

All are welcome to observe or celebrate the event at various places in Singapore, including Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Temple, Lian Shan Shuang Lin Temple and Buddhist Lodge.

Vesak Day is always celebrated in the month of May, although the exact date varies with the lunar calendar. In 2012, it will fall on 5 May.
