The Standard Chartered Marathon in Singapore is arguably the most prolific race in Singapore to run, achieving record-breaking numbers every year since its inception in 2002. Every first Sunday of December, thousands of participants from all walks of life run past some of Singapore’s most iconic landmarks such as Chinatown, Esplanade Theatres by the Bay and the Singapore Flyer. In 2011, an estimated 65,000 runners ran the race.
The marathon has a few formats for runners to take part in, namely, the full marathon, the half marathon, the 10 km race for men, women and those in wheelchairs. There are also options for children to get in on the fun, from 3 years and below all the way up to 13 years of age. Those 6 years and below can be accompanied by a parent.
This year’s theme – “Run for a Reason” encourages all runners to submit their individual reasons for taking part in the Marathon. Supporters can also send in words of support for their friends and family taking part to spur them on.
The Standard Chartered Marathon 2012 will be held on the 2nd of December. The run will feature three different start points and routes for the Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km. The Kids Dash also offers aspiring little runners the chance to experience the Marathon, while the Ekiden promises to foster both teamwork and strategic planning among a team of six runners completing the Full Marathon in a relay format.
In conjunction with the Standard Chartered Marathon 2012, other related events are also held, such as the Registration Launch on 6 July 2012 from 11am to 4pm, various road shows targeted at raising the awareness of the athletics culture in Singapore, running clinics to better physically prepare the participants for the actual day and a kids' camp.
