Travel in style aboard the Jewel Cable Car and enjoy breathtaking and stunning views of the southern part of Singapore, while suspended some 60 metres above the sea. A perennial favourite among tourists, the cable car travels from the scenic Mount Faber to the popular island of Sentosa.
As part of its masterplan for tourism projects in Singapore, the local government decided on a cable car that would connect Sentosa to Mount Faber. Construction of the system eventually finished on 15 February 1974, six years after its initial conceptualisation and two years after construction actually began.
The system initially had 43 cabins, which was increased to 51 cabins two years later. The world's first Mass Weddings on the cable cars was held in the late 1970s and the system eventually had its 10 millionth rider in 1988. It hosted the contestants of the Miss World Pageant in 1989 and the sportsmen and officials for the Southeast Asian Games in 1990.
In 1994, the cabins were upgraded, increasing the number of cabins to 80 and increasing the total capacity of passengers to 1400 per hour in either direction. 5 years later, the Singapore cable car system introduced glass-bottomed cabins. Recently, the cable car system was upgraded again, and reopened on July 21 2010.
Step into the elegant metallic black cars with chrome trimming and experience greater comfort with the larger cabins that can now seat eight passengers per cabin rather than its previous six, with new flip-up seats and a new music system. These cars also offer a stunning panoramic view of the Southern precinct with its transparent enclosure. Opt for the regular cabins or treat yourself to a more luxurious experience with the World's First 7* VIP Jewelled Cabin.
As with the Singapore Flyer, you can opt for a luxurious Sky Dining experience. Pamper your significant other with a delicious three-course meal out among the stars and above the glorious city skyline for a truly memorable and romantic evening.
Whether as a transport option to get from the main island of Singapore to the smaller island of Sentosa, or simply as a way to see aerial views of Singapore, the cable car is surely the most scenic and aesthetically stunning way to achieve these goals.
