Hailed as an engineering and architectural marvel, the Helix Bridge is fascinating and functional at the same time. Linking Marina Centre to Marina South and Marina Bay, it is an icon in its own right.
The ultra-modern Helix Bridge was opened on 18 July 2010, linking cultural, recreational and entertainment facilities in the area. Designed by architects from Cox Group, engineers from Arup and Singapore-based Architects 61, the arches of the pedestrian bridge resemble a giant double-helix structure, which is also on CNNGo's list of the world's most amazing bridges.
To protect pedestrians from the harsh elements, canopies of fritted-glass and perforated steel mesh were incorporated in the inner spiral and there are five viewing platforms, vantage points from which to see the events going on at Marina Bay, as well as capture Singapore's skyline. Paintings and drawings done by children are usually exhibited along the bridge, adding a dash of colour to the gleaming silver structure.
Be sure to visit the bridge at night when it is fully illuminated, creating lots of opportunities for great pictures.
