You can’t miss the Esplanade Theatres on The Bay, with the spiky bug-eyed design that resemble a pair of massive durians from afar. The Esplanade Theatres comprise a concert hall and theatre that can seat 1600 and 2000 people respectively.
The unique design of the building was conceptualised and designed by DP Architects of Singapore, and London-based Michael Wilford & Partners. Its original design consisted of unadorned glass cases over the theatres. A cladding of aluminum sunshades was added to the final design which has now been unofficially named after a spiky fruit that Singaporeans love - the durian.
From Broadway musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Chicago to avant garde performances, the Esplanade Theatre is an ideal location for sampling a taste of high culture in Singapore. If your passion is geared more towards a soul-stirring musical performance, check out the Esplanade Concert Hall, which seats 1 614 people with a capacity of another 197 in the gallery. It boasts superb acoustics and is one out of five halls throughout the world with such advanced acoustic features. Treat yourself in hearing the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir sing, and be awed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's performances.
The Esplanade is also accessible through an underpass that links it to Raffles City, CityLink Mall, Marina Square, Suntec City and Millenia Walk. The underpass is a fantastic place for getting acquainted with local culture, as there are often youths practicing their dance moves or skateboarding here. In addition, there are regular art installations along the walkways, showcasing local artists' work. One such installation was comprised of body outlines of people in strange poses, which made a perfect photo opportunity, especially if taken in a group.
For more photo opportunities of the city and Marina Bay skyline, simply head for the Roof Terrace, which is landscaped with lawns, shrubs and small shade trees, where you can relax at the seating areas or gather your friends together for photos with the Singapore skyline as the backdrop. Wind down the day with unique drinks at the rooftop bar, Orgo or chill to Jazz tunes at Southbridge Jazz @ 7atenine. Satisfy your sweet tooth at The Cookie Museum, while also sampling uniquely Singaporean flavours such as Nasi Lemak cookies!
For picturesque views, stroll down the Esplanade for amazing views of the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort and Singapore's iconic cityscape. Whether in the day or at night, Singapore's stunning landscape is definitely photo-worthy!
