Southeast Asian Film Festival 2012

Following its successful run in 2011, the Singapore Art Museum will present its second Southeast Asian Film Festival 2012 this March. Focused on contemporary Singapore and its immediate neighbours, the Festival extends the reach of the Museum’s Southeast Asian exhibitions and continues its mission to showcase and document the most contemporary visual art and cultural expressions of the region.

The Festival will be featuring 20 challenging works by Southeast Asia’s key and rising filmmakers – a timely showcase of the new wave of Southeast Asian Cinema with 18 of the films produced in 2011, and two in 2010. The selection of films reflect and bring to the forefront a range of pertinent issues facing the region through the medium of the moving image. Many of the 20 films are also being shown outside their home country for the first time, 19 of which are Singapore premieres. Noted films include Adolfo Alix, Jr.’s gritty and fantastical Fable of the Fish, Kamila Andini’s (daughter of Garin Nugroho) debut feature The Mirror Never Lies, Pham Nhue Giang’s lyrical Mother’s Soul and Before We Forget, a compelling documentary by young Singaporeans Jeremy Boo and Lee Xian Jie. Additionally, there will be a special directors’ panel on Southeast Asian cinema, and 12 post-screening discussions.

The Southeast Asian Film Festival will run from 2 to 31 March 2012 at the Moving Image Gallery at Singapore Art Museum at 8Q. In addition to free admission to the Director’s Panel and the relevant post-screening discussions, film festival ticket holders will also enjoy one-time free admission to SAM in the month of March.
