How Restaurant Week Started

Pioneered by DiningCity.com, Restaurant Week is an innovative and successful event which has become the culinary event in countries such as Austria, Belgium and USA. Restaurant Week is also an exciting opportunity to amplify and establish Singapore’s position as the Food Capital of Asia.

The idea of the Restaurant Week originally came from New York, where it is a huge success and takes place several times a year. In March 2007, the first Restaurant Week took place in Amsterdam and was an enormous success. Six months later in August 2007, DiningCity organised a second Restaurant Week in the five most popular cities in the Netherlands - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Haarlem.  In March 2008, Restaurant Week became a national event. In March 2010 over 1,250 restaurants participated and more than 221,000 people booked online through the dedicated Restaurant Week website.

Currently, the Restaurant Week in the Netherlands and in Belgium is a bi-annual event. The fact that the number of visitors on the website exceeded 2.5 million people is proof that it is a very popular and successful concept.  As a consequence of its success in The Netherlands, Restaurant Week Belgium and Restaurant Week Vienna are also highly-lauded. In 2010, Restaurant Week made its debut appearance in Rome, Singapore and Shanghai. Singapore has the honour of being the “First city in Asia” to showcase Restaurant Week.
