Otah

Otah
Pronunciation: oh tahk

Description:
Also known as the Otak-Otak, the Otah is a small, flat strip of meat paste wrapped in a banana-leaf strip and roasted over a burning charcoal fire. This Peranakan specialty usually consists of fish mashed with a good mix of coconut milk, chilli paste, lemongrass and garlic. Although fish is the most common base, some otahs use prawns, cuttlefish, crabs and fish heads as a alternative to the norm.

Trivial:
Otah means “brains” in Malay due the soft, mushy nature of the Otah's texture. A pretty morbid name for such a delicacy if you think about it.
