Staying in Bugis

By: joyceho on 11 Apr 2011
Skewed slightly away from the city centre, Singapore's Bugis and Kampong Glam area are increasingly popular with the budget-conscious traveller. In the area, you’ll find the two main shopping malls and bazaar streets, ie. Bugis Junction, Iluma and Bugis Street as well as inexpensive Thai, Middle Eastern and Muslim eateries and a few temples. While it still boasts the brand-conscious Hotel Inter-Continental Singapore and the regular mid-range hotels, backpacker hostels have been springing up over the last few years such that it’s hard to keep up with them.

Establishments such as Feel At Home, Superb Hub @ Bugis City and ABC Hostel have been well-received by backpackers. Affordable and providing their own take on Singapore’s culture these backpacker hostels are often managed by local backpacking enthusiasts.

The Beach Hotel lies incredibly near the Bugis MRT Station with rooms starting from S$120 per night. Similarly, Summer View Hotel located next to Sim Lim Square, behind Bugis Street offers small rooms but serves with a big heart. A short walk from the National Library, the recently refurbished Grand Pacific Hotel along Victoria Street provides guests with the much needed space to take a breather without steering them too far from the city.

Mid-range hotels nearer to Kampong Glam include the Landmark Village Hotel situated diagonally across from the Sultan Mosque, and Parkroyal On Beach Road located across the road from Arab Street. Sleepy Sam’s Bed and Breakfast also works out to be a strategic location, ideal for soaking in the atmospheric delight of the Malay ethnic quarters.

With such close proximity to the city centre with the convenience of the underground Bugis MRT Station, the Bugis and Kampong Glam area a great option for travellers who wish to experience a different side of Singapore.
