Update: Sinema Old School will be moving out of its current premises in June 2012 to make way for redevelopment in the area.

To get into Singapore's underground cinema scene, you may just have to go up instead.

Located behind the Plaza Singapura shopping mall at the top of Mount Sophia is an independent cinema, the Sinema Old School. Set up by Old School and Sinema.SG, the Sinema Old School screens local and regional movies, and hosts talks by directors and discussions with actors.

Sinema Old School also hosts the annual Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF), screening a variety of movies, especially those of the art-house variety. Somewhat obscure films may also find their way here, and with tickets ranging from as low as $5 to $8 at maximum, it's an inexpensive way to explore thought-provoking movies.

The theatre boasts 136 plush leather seats and a state-of-the-art projection-and-sound system. You can visit its online website at sinema.sg for its programme or read more about Singapore’s film scene.
