Shopping for CDs

By: mckenwong on 24 May 2012

Visitors to Singapore have a wide variety of places to shop for CDs and DVDs. You won't find any bootleg content here, though, thanks to strictly enforced laws that have clamped down such illegal trade over the years. The shops listed below sell only the real deal, and at reasonable prices too.

Gramophone

It's more than just a one-stop music CD store; Gramophone provides excellent library of DVD titles as well. Its nine outlets are easily among the best places in town to get second-hand CDs and DVDs, along with computer software.

The stores also possess a decent collection of vinyls for collectors.

That CD Shop

This home-grown music store has gained much stature over the past 16 years. Typically furnished with plush, inviting decor, the chain's stores in Great World City, Tanglin Mall, Pacific Plaza, The Paragon and Raffles City are great places to hang out for sonic refreshment.

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable; so, if there's some rare album or movie you're looking for, feel free to ask for help. Or better yet, ask for recommendations -- it never hurts to explore something new!

And, yes, if you're a connoisseur, you'd find plenty of vintage vinyls in these stores too.

HMV

This British music and movies retail giant has been in Singapore for quite a while. In terms of sheer variety, it's hard to beat what's on offer at HMV stores -- almost every mass-market album or movie you can possibly think of, really. For Singaporeans and tourists alike, the stores are great places to sample a range of music, thanks to their readily available headphones stations.

Gamers would find plenty of stuff available as well, though probably not at the best prices in town as more specialised stores could probably provide better offers.

HMV currently has two outlets at [email protected] and Marina Square. And, like most giant chain retailers, HMV has tapped into the social network via its Facebook page.

Roxy Records

Looking for something a little bit off the beaten track? Try out Roxy Records, a home-grown business that's been around for almost 50 years. The store supports the local music scene, and may even have records of Chinese opera available, along with other obscure stuff that simply can't be found anywhere else in Singapore.

Musicians here approach Roxy to help promote and sell tickets to their gigs, so it pays to ask what's available. Get the staff's help to locate lesser-known records that you'd probably miss otherwise.

Roxy Records is located at Excelsior Shopping Centre, #02-15, 5 Coleman Street.

MJ Multimedia

A one-stop, no-nonsense music retail store, home-grown MJ Multimedia has weathered competition from retail giants pretty well. It now operates from eight stores islandwide, and sells music CDs spanning every genre, along with merchandise by selected artists.

MJ Multimedia stores can be located at Jurong Point, Causeway Point, Tiong Bahru Plaza and Suntec City Tower 5.
