F1 Singapore Grand Prix Support Races

By: Serene Low on 05 Jul 2012
Racing fans eager to catch this year's Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit will have more reasons to rejoice. From September 21-23, motor sport fanatics can catch three top-class support racing series in addition to the Formula 1 night race, all for the price of one ticket!

First up we have the GP2 series, which is making its debut on the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Described as 'one of the brightest motor sport innovations since the combustion engine' and regarded as a 'stepping stone' for future Formula 1 drivers, GP2 has produced no fewer than 12 F1 drivers who are competing for the 2012 World Championship – that’s exactly half the field. In fact six of them are drivers who won the GP2 title before moving up.

Among them are 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who took the GP2 title in 2006 and won the Singapore Grand Prix in 2009, Mercedes star Nico Rosberg, winner of the inaugural GP2 series back in 2005, and the other is Pastor Maldonado. Maldonado, the 2010 GP2 title-winner, took the first-ever Grand Prix win by a Venezuelan in Spain in May to secure the first Williams F1 victory since 2004.

Another series visiting Singapore for the first time is the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Asia Pacific 2012. Fans of the Prancing Horse will want to catch the race that features 30 4.5-litre V8 Berlinettas haring down the track as they compete for the title at the conclusion of the Asia Pacific championship.

Besides the aforementioned races, the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia will also be back for its fifth year at the Marina Bay circuit. The Porsche Carerra Cup, which has been a support race for the Singapore Grand Prix since its debut at 2008, will see over 24 Porsche 911 GT3 cars competing against each other on the street circuit here in Singapore.

Fans who are keen to catch these thrilling events in addition to the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix in September can purchase their tickets from the official site.
