First Red Bull Flugtag in Singapore

By: Serene Low on 25 Sep 2012
Aviation enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that the European Red Bull will be hosting the inaugural Flugtag (pronounced ‘floog-tug’) at Siloso Beach, Sentosa this October. Flugtag is German for “Flying Day”, and will provide daring Singaporeans the chance to showcase their skills at designing, and building a human-powered aircraft before launching it off a six-metre high flight deck. Giving a whole new meaning to the slogan “Red Bull Gives You Wings”, the best flying builds take to the skies and the unsuccessful plummet to the waters below.
Flugtag will take place on Sunday, 28th October, and it is the first time it will be held in South East Asia. The first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Austria in 1992, and by the end of 2011, a total of 108 “Flying Days” have been organized in over 40 cities all over the world. The event often features some very unconventional and hilariously outrageous flying machines, including those shaped like prehistoric reptiles and even flying wedding cakes.

The longest flight ever recorded was set by a German team known as 'Die Rückkehr der Teichfighter' (“The return of the pond fighter”) in Mainz on May 28, 2012 in front of an audience of more than 150,000 people.

If you reckon you can do better, why not register before August 15th? The competition is open to all citizens and residents of Singapore above the age of 16. 40 teams of four (one pilot, three team assisstants) will be judged by a series of criteria, from flight distance to showmanship and creativity. The winning team will be rewarded with a $14,000 trip to Red Bull’s Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria, and the pilot will receive a skydiving package. The second and third best teams will win, respectively, flights to a European destination of their choosing worth $5,000 and a tandem skydiving package in New Zealand.

However, for those of us who prefer to keep our feet firmly on the ground, the event is free-of-charge to spectators, so there is no excuse to miss out on the excitement. Show your support for the teams as they thrill and delight you with their inventions.

Interested teams can register at the official site.
